Wednesday 29 April. Film 25 Years Solidarnosc 'How we tore down the Iron Curtain'

 Directed by Krystyna Mokrosińska (2005)

This one-hour documentary presents the role, which Solidarność trade union and its leader Lech Wałęsa played in the history of Europe and the world. Based on unique archival materials the movie gives a brief and touching overview of the life behind the iron curtain.
Starting with the Yalta Conference through brutal suppression of student demonstrations, a constant threat of Soviet intervention, imposition of martial law up to the strike in Gdańsk shipyard, round table talks and – finally -  Polish EU accession, the movie shows the struggle Solidarność and Wałęsa went through to make Poland a free country and how this freedom movement spread through the rest of former Eastern Europe, even today.
